Part I: Creative Design – The Birth of Inspiration
The starting point of every lady’s bag is a sketch. Designers draw from trend research, artistic inspiration or brand history to map out the original style ideas. In the workshops of top brands such as Chanel, designer Karl Lagerfeld’s hand-painted manuscripts often have only simple outlines and color hints, pocket requirements behind bags, and layered details of inner pockets.
Part II: Material Selection – Good Package Starts with Good Material
The choice of leather
Leather is the core of bag quality. Most of the leather raw materials of top brands such as Chanel, Prada and Mulberry come from high-quality producing areas such as Italy.
Common types of leather:
- Calfskin: Fine and soft texture, smooth surface, is a common material for high-end bags
- Sheepskin: Softer, lighter and warmer to the touch, but with higher technological requirements
- Rare leather: such as crocodile skin, ostrich skin, etc., for exclusive customized products
Part III: Plate Making and Cutting – Accurate to the Millimeter
To convert a design into a pattern
The typesetter transforms the design drawings into precise paper patterns – bag body, bag cover, side pieces, shoulder straps.. Each part has a corresponding shape and size. The average bag consists of 25 to 30 pieces.
In modern factories, patterns are converted to CAD format for subsequent precision cutting.
Part IV: Table Craft – The Refinement of Details
Slice and Shave Evenly
In order to ensure that the thickness of each part of the bag is just right and the edge is not too thick after sewing, technicians need to thin the edge of the leather first, then cut it evenly, and finally bond it with the reinforcing material. This link tests the craftsman’s hand feeling extremely.
Edge Treatment and Dyeing
Leather edges need to be carefully treated – dyed, sealed, polished.. It should be both beautiful and durable. The work of the dyeing stage is mainly to color the edges of the leather to create a perfect visual effect.
Splicing and Gluing
The parts are preliminarily fixed by the environment-friendly adhesive to prepare for the subsequent sewing.
Part V: Sewing – The Infusion of Soul
Piecemeal Sewing
Sewing is the core of bag making. Sewing requires a high degree of precision, because it is directly related to the fastness and appearance of the bag.
Take Chanel 2.55 bag as an example, the iconic diamond pattern on the bag surface requires craftsmen to sew back and forth precisely. This craft is not only for beauty, but also for the full three-dimensional texture of the bag body.
The Making of the Shoulder Strap
The production of shoulder straps is often the most labor-intensive link. Take Mulberry Alexa bag as an example, the woven belt at the handle is woven by hand, and the width should be paid special attention to when weaving. Chanel’s iconic leather chain threading process requires manual threading of leather strips into metal chains one by one, which is a great test of patience and skill.
Sew the Lining
Finally, the lining cloth of the bag is sewn with the outside. The inside design of the classic 2.55 handbag is particularly thoughtful – red and black lining, the inner layer is divided into different pockets, and even lipstick has its specific position.
From the first line in the designer’s pen to the last stitch in the craftsman’s hand, from the high-quality leather in Italy to the century-old workshop in the suburbs of Paris, the birth of a lady’s bag has condensed the wisdom and sweat of countless people. It carries not only objects, but also the aesthetics of an era, a craft on the verge of being lost, and a woman’s best love for herself.
May every bag you bring home accompany you through the long years and witness those moments worth collecting.
